Design thinking encourages organizations to focus on the people they're creating for and leads to human-centered products, services, and internal processes. It is a new way to look at problems in a different way by including human behavior into design.
When faced with a problem, instead of the mindset of I have to solve this, what question can you ask that might move you forward or help you understand the situation better?
“Design thinking is a process for creative problem solving.” Coe Leta Stafford, Managing Director IDEO U
So we need to ask ourselves, why is it important this concept? What is the impact into decision making? There are 3 main reasons for which it is relevant:
It reduces the risk associated with launching new ideas.
It helps organizations learn faster.
It generates solutions that are innovative, not just incremental.
Also there are 3 essential aspects to be considered:
Empathy (human-centered)
Ideation (generating a lot of ideas)
Experimentation
Therefore when design thinking is used correctly we can be benefited in multiple ways such as:
Captures the mindsets and needs of the people you're creating for.
Paints a picture of the opportunities based on the needs of these people.
Can start to anchor on your designs and offers.
In 2009, IDEO designed and launched the HCD Toolkit, a first-of-its-kind book that laid out how and why human-centered design can impact the social sector. In short order, a community of designers, entrepreneurs, and social sector innovators embraced it, buying and downloading over 150,000 copies. This is an example of how this ideology from IDEO has the human well-being in the center of their projects and strategies.
